Journalists Safety Online: iWatch Africa holds maiden training session for Nigerian journalists

iWatch Africa held its maiden training session for 10 Nigerian journalists last Thursday as part of the initiative to empower newsrooms in Ghana and Nigeria to address growing concerns over online violence targeting journalists.

The training exercise featured experts like Kandil Heba who works with the Thomson Reuters Foundation and took participants through practical use of the new TRFilter platform. The TRFilter platform helps journalists counter online violence by filtering out abusive comments.

Gideon Sarpong, a 2022 Reuters Fellow at Oxford University also provided a roadmap and strategy on how newsrooms can address online violence.

The final speaker Moro Seidu, co-founder of iWatch Africa focused on iWatch’s data on online abuse and harassment of journalists and where journalists need to pay particular attention.

The second training session with selected Ghanaian journalists will take place on Thursday 25th August 2022.
